FAQs – Laser Hair Removal

The laser hair removal process works by sending a beam of laser light to a group of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root while not harming the surrounding skin. The laser beam finds the hair follicles by targeting melanin (the substance that gives skin and hair color). Laser treatments work best on dark, coarse hair; however, are also effective on light to medium brown hair as long as there is some pigment. It is important to note that laser treatments will not be effective with white, gray, red or blond hair.

Contrary to statements made by those unfamiliar with this technology, when laser hair removal is properly performed, it is effective for the vast majority of candidates. The small percent who will not respond to laser treatments are primarily limited to those with blond, white, gray or red hair. The latest in laser technology is capable of 80-99% permanent reduction for ALL skin types, male and female, and for ALL body areas and facial areas. The number of sessions needed to achieve these results can vary from person to person depending on many factors such as age, skin type, amount of hair, hair color, hair texture, etc. Industry experts recommend five to seven sessions; and at Satin Med Spa, we offer packages of seven sessions backed by our Satin Smooth Guarantee* to achieve the best results.

It depends on several factors: thick hairs respond better than thin hair, darker hair responds faster than the lighter ones. Seven sessions of laser treatment for dark thick hair should result in as much as 95% of hair reduction. For example, on the bikini area, hair will respond to seven sessions of laser hair removal with up to 99% hair reduction. Lighter and finer hair on bikini area may have only about 60% reduction in growth after seven sessions of laser treatment. Underarms, chest and upper arms typically produce about 85-90% of hair growth reduction with seven sessions. The male back and female face are more challenging and can take a few additional treatments. Of course results can vary from person to person and you could get better results than others.

The average time between treatment sessions is six to eight weeks to allow for new hair follicles to cycle into the active growth phase. Appointments should be scheduled within two (2) weeks of seeing new hair growth.

You will see results after the VERY FIRST treatment! You will have fewer hairs and they will be finer and weaker. Your skin will be smoother and your hair pores less visible. The results will become more impressive with each successive treatment.

  • Facial Hair: Typically, facial treatments are scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart. This is usually when you start to see new hair growth.
  • Lower Legs: Legs are one of the best areas for laser hair removal. The initial treatments are scheduled 6 weeks apart and then may be spaced 8 to 10 weeks apart depending on the individual.
  • Male Back and Chest: Initial treatments are generally scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart and usually after four treatments, treatments will be scheduled 8 to 10 weeks apart.
  • Underarms and Bikini: These areas typically have the best results because the hair tends to be darker and coarser. Treatments are typically scheduled 6 weeks apart.

The treated area will be cleared of the majority of visible hair during the treatment. Remaining treated hair will shed in approximately two weeks. Depending on the area, the skin will remain clear and smooth for 4 to 6 weeks before seeing new hair growth. When repeating the sessions on schedule, the area will remain hair free throughout the entire program. Your skin will look and feel completely clear and smooth.

Immediately following a laser treatment, clients should experience reddened and puffy skin. This is called “follicular edema” and resembles goose bumps. It feels somewhat like a mild sunburn. This usually dissipates within a few minutes to a few hours. In the hands of an experienced medical provider using the right equipment, patients will not experience any damage to their skin. Many patients schedule treatments during their lunch break and return to their offices with no visible indications.

Laser hair removal will not work on white, gray, red or light blond hair. I have a hormonal problem. Would laser work for me? Females who are experiencing PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) can expect to experience great results from laser treatments. These female clients can achieve excellent results over the entire body, but to remain hair free on the face, maintenance treatments will most likely be needed throughout life due the hormonal changes that may activate new hair follicles.

While light skin and dark hair is the ideal candidate for laser hair removal, in general, multiple treatment sessions are necessary to obtain optimal results. This is due, in large part, to the fact that laser hair removal is most effective on hair which is in the anagen hair growth phase. Hair grows in cycles and not all of the hairs are in anagen at any given time.

FAQs – Botox & Dermal Fillers

Botox® is a natural, purified protein isolated from the Clostridium Botulinum Bacterium through a highly refined, patented process. Upon injection, this safe and effective protein relaxes muscles, allowing the overlying skin to look smoother.

As time passes we develop expression lines (dynamic wrinkles) as a result of muscle activity such as frowning, and smile lines. When Botox® is injected directly into the muscles; it blocks the transmission of nerve impulses, thus reducing the activity of the muscles that causes those persistent lines to form.

This will take 2-3 days to start working and the maximum effects will be seen after ten days. Once the muscle is fully relaxed, there is significant improvement in the wrinkles and those that are mild to moderate in depth may even disappear. Botox® treatments usually last four to six months, however individual response will vary.

Dermal Fillers are used to smooth away lines and replace volume loss. At Satin Med Spa, we use a full range of the latest cutting edge products and technology when doing dermal filler treatments. Many dermal fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Hyaluronic Acid is a natural substance found in the skin and body which diminishes as part of the aging process, causing dry, loose skin and reduced fullness of the face. The most common areas to treat with dermal fillers are the “nose to mouth grooves” (nasolabial folds), frown lines, as well as to fill and plump the lips.

Dermal Fillers are injected under the skin to instantly restore volume. It is a smooth consistency gel that flows easily into the skin for a natural look and feel. The area will be numbed with a blocking agent. The skin will be properly cleansed and the gel will be injected. The results are immediate and depending on the type of filler used, such as Juvederm or Radiesse, the results can last up to twelve months; with Voluma, as long as two years.

As part of the natural aging process we tend to lose volume in the lips, particularly the upper lip. Lip enhancement with dermal fillers is used to increase the volume and fullness of thin-looking lips and to help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Before the gel is injected, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area. Due to the anatomy of the lips, swelling following treatment can sometimes be significant and take up to seven days to diminish. After treatment a cool pack will be placed over the lips for comfort and to reduce swelling. During this time the lips may appear slightly uneven and the final result should not be judged for a full week.

Lip enhancement results are immediate and can last as long as twelve months. However, results will vary for each individual and typically will last longer with successive treatments.

FAQs – Laser Vein Removal & Sclerotherapy

The laser used at Satin Med Spa is the most advanced laser for the treatment of leg veins. Depending on the severity of the veins, three to four treatments may be needed to achieve a treatment goal. Laser vein removal treatments take about 20 minutes. There is some discomfort during the procedure but this usually dissipates by the time the patient leaves the clinic. Patients can return to normal activity right after treatment. For larger veins, over 3mm, other forms of therapy are indicated. For tiny veins that are unable to be treated with sclerotherapy, laser treatment is the best option.

With laser treatment, a laser is directed onto the skin over your spider veins. Laser energy causes your spider veins to coagulate and shrink. Laser therapy is most effective for small and medium size spider veins. Large spider veins are best treated with sclerotherapy. You are likely to experience mild discomfort similar to having a small rubber band snapping against your skin.

Immediately following treatment, spider veins will be darker and more visible. Over two to six weeks, your spider veins usually fade. After each treatment, you will see improvement in the appearance of the area treated. For optimal results, an average of three treatments will be required at three month intervals between sessions. Combination therapy can be considered and beneficial if you have a combination of small, medium and large spider veins. You may wish to start with sclerotherapy, because sometimes all veins will be improved after injecting the larger ones. This may reduce the number of veins that need to be treated by laser and minimize your overall cost.

Sclerotherapy involves injections of a specialized sclerosing agent which collapses the veins and allows them to fade away. It normally takes a series of treatments spaced about four to six weeks apart to achieve optimal results. It is possible for additional veins to develop over time and thus the need for maintenance treatments may be needed.

A typical sclerotherapy session takes about 30 minutes during which time a series of injections are made into the unwanted veins. After treatment, tight fitting support hose is recommended to be worn for a period of time. Walking is encouraged in the post operative period. It is common for the treatment area to look worse before it improves, with some bruising and brown discoloration for a period of time. Once the compression dressings are removed, you will notice bruising and reddish areas at the injection sites. The bruises will diminish within a month. In some cases, there may be some residual brownish pigmentation which may take up to a year to completely fade.
