Botox

As the most well-recognized neurotoxin product on the market, you’ve likely seen your fair share of Botox quotes and memes across the internet, particularly on social media. Botox was first approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002, specifically for treatment of “eleven” lines between the eyebrows, the glabellar lines. It quickly became a household name in the medical aesthetics industry for the quick, go-to treatment of fine lines and wrinkles around the forehead and crow’s feet, as well as glabellar lines. However, the myriad of medical applications for which Botox can help goes far beyond the temporary reduction of facial wrinkles – from treating chronic migraines, excessive sweating, neck spasms, overactive bladder and even for its jaw slimming effects.

Dysport

Like Botox, Dysport is a neurotoxin derived from botulinum toxin that is predominantly used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. However, Botox and Dysport are not identical. The most notable difference between the two is the level of concentration between the two products – Dysport is more diluted than Botox and requires 2.5 to 3 times the amount of units required to see results. However, the price per unit of Dysport is significantly less than that of Botox, so the use of Dysport isn’t necessarily more expensive than the use of Botox, in fact, the price per treatment usually comes up to about the same.

As for molecular behavior and diffusion, Dysport typically spreads faster and more quickly, especially over a larger surface area with just a few injections, making it a good choice for the forehead and 11 lines.

Xeomin

Like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is an FDA-approved injectable treatment derived from another type of botulinum toxin type A called incobotulinumtoxinA. Xeomin has gained popularity in recent years, particularly for patients who have used Botox and Dysport over the years and have found that the injections to be increasingly less effective. This is because Xeomin is unique from other forms of the botulinum toxin A, as it does not contain preservative proteins. Botox and Dysport both contain preservative proteins, which means the body may develop antibodies to these products over time, thus decreasing their efficacy. Fortunately, Xeomin is a wonderful alternative for patients who are having this experience. Xeomin is a pure form of the neurotoxin, which does not cause the body to produce antibodies. As a result, the body does not grow resistant to the treatment over time.
